Sweet Summer Tank: Size-Inclusive Crochet Tank Top Pattern

Share here!

This crochet tank top pattern is as fun to make as it is to wear! The Sweet Summer Tank is made from 3 separate panels sewn together, with a 4-row pattern repeat that keeps your interest. The fun triangular texture comes from starting each panel the way you would start a shawl. The size-inclusive top comes in 9 different sizes, designed for bust sizes of 28″ to 62″.

Wear this tank with jeans, a skirt, or over a dress/short sleeve top for a fun 90’s vibe. It also works great as a swimsuit cover-up for the beach.

Inspiration – Crochet Tank Top Pattern

I wanted to make something that has a similar look to a granny square tank top, without having to sew in a million ends. I love those granny square tanks where a corner of the square creates the top of the tank where a strap is attached to. So I decided to make panels the way you would make a shawl, giving each panel that triangular shape at the top!

The 4-row stitch pattern is something I actually made last year while playing around with yarn. It’s one of my favorite things to do when I’m bored – grab some yarn and a hook and see what you make. I know it would be the perfect stitch pattern for this shape!

The stitch pattern and shape combined were SO summer I had to call it the Sweet Summer tank. It looks great with everything, whether you are at the beach or just running errands in town. It’s my new go-to top!

The Yarn

I used WeCrochet’s Cotlin yarn (70% Cotton, 30% Linen), a dk weight yarn. While the linen adds stiffness to the garment, the stitch pattern was intended to create drape and the cotton/linen combination makes for the PERFECT summer top!

If you’d like to substitute with a different yarn, I do highly recommend another stiff yarn using either linen, cotton, or blends of these materials. Acrylic and wool are another option. However, I do recommend staying away from the softer materials like silk and bamboo. Several testers used cotton/bamboo blends, and while their tops looked gorgeous, they tended to stretch throughout the day.

Skills Needed

You’ll need to know the basic crochet stitches (single crochet and half double crochet in U.S. Terminology). If you are brand new to crochet or need a refresher, check out my how to crochet post here.

You’ll also need to know how to find & crochet into the “third loop” of a stitch – photos and linked youtube tutorials are included in the pattern. Another recommended skill is learning to do a magic circle to start each panel, but a work-around is included in the pattern for those of you who don’t like working magic circles.

Other skills include single crocheting 2 together, sewing two panels together using the whip stitch, single crocheting evenly around a neckline, and sewing in buttons.
