Free Crochet Cozy Pattern – Heart on my Sleeve Coffee Cup Cozy

Share here!

I love quick, fun projects that can be made for a Valentine’s Day gift, but used throughout the year! This free crochet cozy pattern was designed for coffee cups but can easily be changed for any size cup.

It has the cutest, subtle hearts that add a fun texture to the cup, and the best part is you can make them quickly for a last-minute gift!

The Yarn

Using wool or cotton yarn is safest when it comes to anything exposed to heat. While a coffee cup doesn’t get extremely hot, I do recommend using either wool or cotton, especially if you are making these as a gift or to sell. It’s always best to play it safe.

I used a gorgeous wool yarn gifted from Arcane Fibre Works to make these cozies in the colorway Pink Petals on the Worsted Weight, 100% merino wool base. Hand-dyed yarn like this just adds to the uniqueness of the gift – no two cozies will look the same! Arcane Fibre Works also sells some gorgeous semi-solid colors that would bring the focus to the heart details.

Whatever yarn you choose, just make sure it’s heat-resistant (wool/cotton)

Skills Needed

The cozy is made by working in the round. The two main stitches are Single Crochet (Sc) and a Mini-Puff Stitch (See tutorial below).

If you are brand new to crochet or need a refresher, check out our how-to crochet post here.

Mini-Puff Stitch

This stitch is the key to our puffy hearts! Instructions below.

Yarn over, insert hook into designated stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and insert hook into same stitch, pull up a loop so that you have 5 loops on your hook (see photo 1), yarn over and pull through 4 loops (see photo 2), yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops (see photo 3)

Materials Needed

About 35 yards of worsted weight wool or cotton yarn (100% Merino wool, worsted weight, from Arcane Fibre Works was used)

Size 4.5mm crochet hook (My favorites are the ergonomic hooks from this crochet hook set)

A yarn or tapestry needle

Scissors

A to-go or reusable coffee cup

Gauge & Size

Gauge:

This project is so small, that gauge is not significant. That said, check that your cozy will fit a coffee cup after working a couple of rounds of the pattern. If it’s too small, go up a hook size, if it’s too loose, try going down a hook size.

Size:

Unstretched, the size of the cozy laying flight should be roughly 4″ wide x 3.5″ tall.

Abbreviations (U.S. Terminology)

Ch = Chain

St = Stitch

Yo = Yarn Over

Sl St = Slip Stitch (Insert hook into next stitch, Yo, pull through stitch and loop on hook)

Sc = Single Crochet (Insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop, Yo and pull through both loops on hook)

Mini Puff = Mini Puff Stitch, see skills needed section
