Tunisian Crochet Tank Top Pattern – August Tank

Share here!

If you love the look of knit tank tops, but prefer crochet, this tank was designed specifically for you! The August Tank is a Tunisian crochet tank top pattern that has that ribbed texture of your favorite knit tank. It has a high bib and gorgeous detailing in the construction of the bib decreases and straps!

The main stitches of the pattern are the Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) and the Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS). The TPS can be a bit tricky to learn, but once you get it down I promise it’s fun! I do recommend looking up different tutorials if you are learning and get stuck – there are lots of ways to move your hook to make the stitch, so find the way that’s comfortable for you.

Inspiration

I’ve been wanting to make a classic ribbed tank for a while. A simple quick go-to piece that is both handmade and wearable. And I knew the Tunisian Rib stitch was the perfect stitch to use!

I didn’t quite like the ratio of knit to purl stitches in a lot of the Tunisian Rib tutorials out there, so I made a few swatches until I found the perfect ratio for this tank: 3 Tunisian knit stitches followed by 2 Tunisian purl stitches. I also wanted a high bib and a border around the decreasing for the bib that flows up into the straps.

The Yarn

I wanted to work with an affordable yarn that could easily be found at big yarn stores in the U.S., so I went with Lion Brand’s Baby Soft. It is 60% acrylic and 40% nylon (the nylon helps it feel so wearable!) and a dk weight. The color used in the sample is called Dusty Green. I highly recommend an acrylic, wool or nylon blend for this pattern.

That said, pattern testers used everything from acrylic, to wool, to cotton, to bamboo blends. Just keep in mind when choosing a yarn that this garment works best with some stretch to it, so if you are using a yarn like cotton (little stretch) or bamboo (stretches but bounce back) consider this when choosing your size.
